iMentor is changing the face of New York City mentoring. iMentor is able to connect working professionals to youth in New York City’s most underserved and low-income communities by capitalizing on a technology-enriched mentoring model that combines weekly email communication with traditional in-person meetings. The result? Each year, thousands of lives are changed when iMentor aligns mentee personal, academic, and career aspirations with mentor work and life experiences, providing mentees with access to new perspectives and opportunities.

Description:
iMentor matches adult volunteers one-on-one with high school students based on their shared career or personal interests. Mentors exchange regular email with their mentees -- sharing advice and experiences (e.g. on college and careers), and acting as supportive friends. Mentors are also required to meet their mentee in person at least five times a year at iMentor sponsored events.

Volunteers must be at least 21 years old, and must live AND work in the New York City metropolitan area. We are looking for volunteers from a variety of professional backgrounds to accommodate the interests of our students.

History:
Mentor was founded in 1999 by hedge-fund manager John Griffin (Blue Ridge Capital), and two civil rights attorneys, Rich Buery and Matt Klein. The program began with 49 students in one school in the South Bronx. In just over six years of operation, iMentor has provided mentors to more than 2,000 young people from over 30 NYC schools and after school programs. Annually, iMentor serves 700+ young people from some of New York City's most under-served and low income communities.
