WET (Women’s Expressive Theater, Inc.) is a New York City based 501(c) 3 non-profit production company that produces media that challenges female stereotypes and advocates for equality. WET adheres to its mission by producing and promoting innovative female-generated projects in theater, film, television and education.
History:
WET was founded in 1999 by executive producers Sasha Eden and Victoria Pettibone. WET’s theatrical productions develop and launch the careers of emerging female playwrights while our events promote and support celebrated female artists and create employment and mentoring opportunities for emerging artists. The need for WET’s mission is supported by a study conducted by the New York State Council for The Arts (NYSCA) which found that only 16% of the plays produced in the United States during the 2001-2002 season were written by women. According to the author of the study, Suzanne Bennett, the numbers have remained similar since then. These statistics are further evidence that, despite the numerous awards presented to female playwrights, their work is not considered by the industry as “universal.” It is this conception, among others, that ultimately denigrates the commercial viability of female writers and creates a significant gender gap, not only in theater, but throughout media production. WET has set out to solve this problem by producing, promoting, and even commissioning, playwrights such as Joyce Carol Oates, Rona Munro, Lucy Thurber, Sheila Callaghan, Julia Jordan, the trio of Mia Baron, Maggie Lacey and Danielle Skraastad and now Anna Ziegler. WET’s productions have effectively launched the careers of the later five, providing these playwrights world premiere productions and their first New York Times reviews.
