The mission of fresh art, a non-profit organization, is to provide expanded artistic and personal development as well as entrepreneurial opportunities to New York City artists with special needs. fresh art's artists reflect a diversity of under-served groups throughout the city. They are seniors, people with mental illness, physical and emotional disabilities, HIV-AIDS, in long-term recovery from chemical addiction, homelessness and low income existences.
Description:
fresh art was formed in 1997 by people active in the social services and the arts, who believe that artists with special needs should be recognized for their talent and not solely for the obstacles in their lives. Through fine art exhibitions and arts and crafts workshops, fresh art introduces these artists to the greater community with the belief that they will benefit in all aspects of their lives from being recognized for their cultural contributions to society.
History:
Since 1999 fresh art has presented twenty-six fine art exhibitions with artwork created from programs at twenty-seven New York City social service agencies, community groups and supportive housing facilities. Also since 1999,fresh art has created forty-five fine art and craft workshops at fourteen community centers, homeless shelters, drop-in centers and supportive housing facilities.
