High 5 Tickets to the Arts educates and encourages young people to experience and enjoy the arts by offering educational programming and reduced-price tickets for cultural and arts events. We aim to increase enrichment and knowledge among teens while helping arts organizations build new audiences.

Description:
In New York City, one of the cultural capitals of the world, thousands of teenagers have never seen a play, heard a live concert or even set foot in an art museum. High 5 has been addressing this issue for the last twelve years by providing teenagers with $5 tickets to arts events. Each year, we enlist more than 250 different arts organizations to donate tickets, which we then promote and sell directly to teens and adults who work with teens. Our partners include Carnegie Hall, El Museo del Barrio, BAM, MoMA, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, Lincoln Center and many others. High 5 plays a critical role in the audience development efforts of these and other organizations and enables them to expand and diversify their audiences. By paying even $5 per ticket, teens learn how to make the arts a regular part of their lives.

History:
High 5 Tickets to the Arts began when a New York City high school student visited Europe and found affordable student tickets to the opera, the theater and the symphony widely available. She saw that teens regularly took advantage of the discounted tickets and formed an active part of arts audiences. When she returned home, she wanted to replicate that experience for teens in New York City. With her involvement, High 5 began as a volunteer effort in 1993, a cooperative undertaking that included staff at the American Symphony Orchestra, The New York Times and Ticketmaster. Two years later, in 1995, with a grant from Citigroup, High 5 made the transition from a volunteer organization to an independent non-profit with a full-time Executive Director and a small staff and board. One thousand $5 tickets were sold in High 5’s first three months.
