World Savvy's mission is to educate and engage young people in community and world affairs.
Through our three core programs for youth and educators, we help young people develop skills for thinking critically about global issues in the 21st century. In all of our work with youth, there is a strong emphasis on critical thinking, expression and problem solving, so that youth are prepared for personal and professional success in the global community. We strive to make dialogue and leadership on community and world affairs accessible in particular to youth in low income or underserved communities, and our recruiting strategies reflect this goal.
Description:
Greater international awareness has always been needed, and recent events demonstrate that we must all develop a comprehensive understanding of world events. To this end, World Savvy provides educational programs and services with the aim of informing young people about issues such as poverty, conflict and peace building, human rights, and the environment. World Savvy's goals are to develop students' skills to prepare them for their future as global citizens, enhance their understanding of world affairs and develop their sense of responsibility and global citizenship.
World Savvy's vision for the future is one in which all members of society are well informed about contemporary international affairs and act as responsible global citizens. We believe that change will occur if youth are educated about international affairs and are given the tools to think critically about such issues. Additionally, we believe that we must inform and empower youth to see themselves as lifelong global citizens and recognize their related rights and responsibilities.
History:
World Savvy was founded in 2002 by friends and colleagues Dana Curran and Madiha Murshed. Dana and Madiha attended graduate school together at Columbia University's School of International and Public Affairs (SIPA), and spent much of their time lamenting the lack of global awareness among youth in the United States.
Many conversations and months of research later, Dana and Madiha relocated to San Francisco and co-founded World Savvy. Since the founding year, the programs have grown to reach more than 5,000 young people in Northern California and 350+ educators through three core programs. Dana and Madiha developed these program models over an extended period of two years, informed by teaching in the Bay Area and exploring the barriers of integrating global issues in classroom discussion first-hand.
Now in 2007, World Savvy has expanded to New York City. Led by Senior Program Associate Victoria Restler, World Savvy will launch The Global Youth Media and Arts Program in New York City in January 2008.
