Since 1981 Children of the City's mission has remained constant, to change the culture of poverty through outreach and education. We reach "at risk" inner city children and youth with hope, guidance and resources to change their lives and their community in a positive way. We create a personal connection with each child and family to teach them how to overcome the effects of poverty through education and empowerment.
Description:
Children of the City provides a number of outreach programs that help the children and youth of Sunset Park build self esteem and learn to empower themselves through education. We offer after school tutoring programs, summer academic and recreational programs, parenting and job readiness workshops for parents and "Super Saturday" events oonce a month. We work with the community.
History:
Children of the City began in 1981 in Sunset Park, a south Brooklyn neighborhood where one in three families live below the poverty line. This neigborhood has a 48% high school dropout rate. Many children come for single parent homes and most do not speak English at home. Children of the City was created to help both the children and their families by offering structure activities after school and on weekends including tutoring and parent workshops.

Overall Experience
A lot of fun goes into the boxes of love at Children of the City
 |
Children of the City reaches out to the Sunset Park community every holiday season by delivering "boxes of love" low income families. Packing and delivering the groceries naturally evolves into a social event as the organization's staff is friendly and their clients are happy to see us. One single mom, with five kids, had tears in her eyes when she saw the box. posted by Julia Masi on September 22, 2007 |
