The Young Women's Christian Association of the United States of America is a women's membership movement nourished by its roots in the Christian faith and sustained by the richness of many beliefs and values. Strengthened by diversity, our one imperative is to thrust our collective power toward the elimination of racism wherever it exists by any means necessary.
Description:
The YWCA is the oldest and the largest organization in the world run by women, for women. Globally, there is a YWCA presence in 80 countries, the YWCA-USA being one of the largest, with more than 300 YWCA's operating across the country, representing more than two million women, girls, and their families. Community service has always been the major component of the Y. Project CITY is the community service program at the YWCA. It provides safe and fruitful community service learning opportunities while exploring pertinent issues through innovative and creative workshops, Youthology (Student-run newsletter) and other programs. Youth are given the opportunity to give back to the community as well as feel good about themselves, in addition to receiving school credit.
History:
In May of 1978, the YWCA humbly began with an after school program for the children of working immigrant families. This program was initiated by nine Korean immigrant women who joined together with a collective vision to aid displaced immigrant communities in Flushing, Queens. Twenty-six years later, the YWCA of Queens is a multi-service agency with a known track record for leadership and excellence in childcare, educational and cultural programming, social services for immigrants of all ages and community advocacy. All programs offered are specialized, age-appropriate and always reflective of the communities we serve. The YWCA of Queens is an organization with a history deeply rooted in serving and developing immigrant and under served communities. In this tradition the Organization will broaden current programs to be available to all residents of Queens. We will continue to provide our existing programs and services but also create new programs that will focus on young women and girls' leadership development and access to education.
