The A Caring Hand Bereavement Center in Manhattan is a free-standing, comprehensive bereavement center for children, teens and families. We provide group and individual services as well as consultation and educational scholarships for bereaved children and teens.
Description:
The goal of A Caring Hand Bereavement Center is to meet a bereaved child, teen, and family wherever they are in their grief and fulfill their needs in a caring, knowledgeable environment. Our bereavement services focus on expression, coping, remembering, and community building - the essential components of grief work. In addition we provide consultation, education, and outreach to parents, professionals and the community around grief related issues. We believe the services are best tailored to the individual's needs. Groups are one way to help bereaved children and caregivers feel less alone and learn ways to cope with the changes in their life. Volunteers are an essential part of the program and are used to co-facilitate groups as well as help with center related short term projects. Training is provided.
History:
Susan Esposito-Lombardo founded A Caring Hand, The Billy Esposito Foundation in 2002 following the death of her own father on 9/11. The organization provides comprehensive bereavement services in Manhattan/New York City. The foundation began with 2 main programs (1)providing educational scholarships to bereaved children and teens age 3-21 throughout the country with financial need, (2) providing grants to various bereavement centers and programs in the tri-state area and elsewhere (e.g New Orleans following Katrina). In 2007 the foundation began to develop and fund its own free standing, comprehensive bereavement center. The foundation will continue to provide educational scholarships.
