Tikva’s core mission is to care for the homeless, abandoned and abused Jewish children of the Odessa region of Ukraine. Tikva provides a loving home, essential social services, a first-rate education in the environs of a revitalized Jewish community, and an opportunity for a brighter future through immigration to Israel.

Description:
We have kept our promise and in turn have helped the organization grow to its present size, with over 1,300 children and young adults in Odessa and an additional 350 alumni in Israel. Tikva now operates three children’s home, three kindergartens and elementary schools, two high schools, a Jewish university, a synagogue, continuing education classes, home visitation, meal delivery for the elderly and a kosher restaurant and market.

History:
Tikva was founded in 1993 by Israeli Rabbi Shlomo Baksht who traveled to Odessa to help reclaim a historic synagogue that had been turned into a gymnasium. As he began his community outreach efforts, however, he learned of the plight of thousands of Jewish children who lived on the streets, in inhumane state orphanages, or in other situations of extreme poverty and danger, and he knew that the future of Jewish Ukraine lay in the fate of these girls and boys.
