Here at GLADIATOR SPORTS INC. a non profit organization, we believe in putting academics first as we put our children in the classroom and then on the court. GLADIATOR SPORTS INC. conducts an on-going Basketball, Cheer leading , Dance and Educational program for boys and girls, ages 6 through 16.
Description:
At Gladiator Sports, young people from as far as Queens and Brooklyn come to attend our program. Since Basketball and Cheer leading are T E A M (TOGETHER EACH ACHIEVES MORE) sports, emphasis is placed on learning to improve one's self for the good of the whole. Team sports have long been shown as an effective tool in promoting values such as motivation, courage, determination, commitment, integrity, and respect.
Academic courses such as Reading Comprehension, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, Health, Drug abuse and Current Events are offered by certified teachers. The program will periodically present successful people to inspire and motivate our young people.
Gladiator Sports provides basketball instruction in fundamentals such as shooting, dribbling, passing and basketball strategies. Skills are taught by dedicated coaches with several years of experience
Gladiator Sports award winning cheerleaders are taught skills such as Gymnastics, Dance and Step. Instruction is provided by dedicated coaches with several years of experience.
The Program is designed to provide informed and positive instruction in athletic skills, but will also promote even more important life skills such as self discipline, team work and consideration for others.
The program operate primarily on Saturdays from the hours of 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM. Young people are broken up into groups according to age and stage of development. Each participant learns to strive toward a personal best consistent with his or her own abilities.
GLADIATOR SPORTS INC. participates in several basketball tournaments and cheerleader competitions in which the young people compete against other teams in the community.
There are periodic field trips outside the community to visit various historical, cultural and recreational venues such as Madison Square Garden to watch the Knicks and Liberty play.
Gladiator Sports is an AAU affiliated program which competes against other programs located throughout the northeast region including (PA, RI, CT, NJ, MD and MA). Road trips allow our young people, many of who have grown up in Harlem and never venture outside the New York Metro area, to meet their peers from other locations and backgrounds. Clearly this has broaden their sense of the world and their place in it.
History:
Gladiator Sports Inc. was founded in June 2002 by Jude Baptiste and Tony Afflick, both local community activists. Jude Baptiste and Tony Afflick were both raised in Harlem, New York. For the past 6 years Gladiator Sports has provided an on going Sports and Education program for over 100 young people who ages range from 5 - 18 years of age. In serving the community several of our participants have gone on to college. Over this time span, Gladiator Sports has provided a positive alternative to the negative activity that is so tempting to our young people.
