The Women’s City Club of New York (WCCNY) is a nonpartisan, nonprofit civic organization that shapes public policy through education, advocacy and citizen participation.
Description:
Through a volunteer / staff partnership, the Women's City Club of New York advocates for, takes positions on and informs public and elected officials about issues that impact the quality of life of New Yorkers. Volunteer members help organize educational programs, research and analyze issues, and monitor the work of like-minded coalitions and groups. Current advocacy efforts address: universal access to affordable, quality health care; ensuring an adequate supply of affordable housing; supporting environmental initiatives to ensure clean air, water and energy; expand public transportation options; promote women's issues of reproductive justice, pay equity, paid family leave and an end to human trafficking and domestic violence; and, ensuring the continuation of social programs to lift and keep people out of poverty.
History:
Since its founding in 1915 on the eve of women’s suffrage, WCC's founding and early members (e.g. Eleanor Roosevelt, Frances Perkins, Ida Tarbell)recognized that winning the vote would carry certain obligations. They educated themselves and other women about the issues and became involved in policy debates and the political process. Today, WCC members continue to learn and effect change at the city, state and federal levels, commanding the attention of public and elected officials who have called WCC members "reasoned citizen-advocates who know the way to City Hall."
