Educating and preparing girls for a lifetime of self-respect and healthy living.
Description:
GOTR Manhattan is an interactive life-skills program that uses the power of running to change the way girls see themselves and their opportunities. Our innovative health education and wellness program uniquely combines training for a 3.1 mile run/walk event with life-changing, self esteem enhancing lessons that encourage healthy habits and an active lifestyle in 8-12 year old girls. Girls learn to stretch themselves - physically, mentally, socially, and emotionally - and in the process, are inspired to a lifetime of self respect and healthy living!
History:
GOTR Manhattan is an Affiliate Council of Girls on the Run International, which has a network of over 150 locations across the United States and Canada. The Girls on the Run program was founded in 1996, but Girls on the Run Manhattan (GOTRM) only brought the program to Manhattan in the spring of 2006. During that pilot season GOTRM worked with just 6 girls at one location. In the fall of 2006, GOTRM expanded to 5 locations, serving 92 girls. In the spring of 2007, GOTRM expanded further, reaching 148 girls in 8 locations. This fall, GOTRM is serving over 200 girls in 12 locations throughout Manhattan. GOTRM is a volunteer driven organization and we hope to expand to the other four boroughs in the coming years.
