Project Renewal's mission is to renew the lives of homeless men and women in New York City. We focus our efforts on the neediest of the city's indigent population - men and women who are not only homeless but also cope with mental illness and/or substance abuse addiction. The Next Step Program at Project Renewal enables clients/consumers to prepare for, find, and advance in competitive employment by providing adult education and job placement services.
Description:
Project Renewal is the only organization in New York that provides everything homeless people need to move from the streets to independent living. This comprehensive approach begins on the street where our mobile psychiatric and medical outreach teams actively reach out to homeless people where they are struggling to survive. Once connected, we can then help people move into a range of model residential programs, including ones that help residents achieve sobriety or learn to manage their mental illness. From there, we help people prepare for, find, and keep good jobs: we have created an unprecedented breadth and depth of employment programs and opportunities for men and women once considered unemployable. The crucial last element in this progression is providing clients with permanent housing, completing their return to self-sufficient life within the community.
History:
First known as the Manhattan Bowery Corporation, Project Renewal began life in 1967 as a 48-bed alcohol detoxification program at the then-notorious Third Street Men's Shelter. This was one of the nation's first successful treatment programs for "public inebriates," coming at a time when arrest and incarceration were the only responses to the problem. The detox unit set a pioneering course for our programs - programs that provide vulnerable New Yorkers with the tools they need to rebuild their lives. Even while expanding our program horizons, Project Renewal has stayed the course in developing replicable models for renewing the lives of homeless people - and while doing so, have led the way in establishing new public policies for solving the problem of homelessness. In 1995, Project Renewal launched Next Step, a unique employment initiative that provides formerly homeless, recovering substance abusers a full range of services to help them prepare for, obtain and keep good jobs.
