The mission of The American-Scottish Foundation, Inc. is to be the pre-eminent, national, US-based not-for-profit membership organization dedicated to advancing contemporary Scottish interests and meeting contemporary Scottish needs.

Description:
The Foundation's purpose is to conduct such activities as will enable it to fulfill its mission. Activities include fundraising, education, social interaction, facilitation, consultation and promotion of inward travel to Scotland. The Foundation's policy is to collaborate with and support Scottish cultural and commercial organizations.

History:
Beginning in 1956, the Foundation developed, through a variety of major initiatives, an important reputation as a leading Scottish not-for-profit organization in the United States.

These initiatives included the election of a group of prominent and respected Scots as Honorary Sponsors and the creation and operation of Scotland House as an informal 'Scottish Embassy' in the US. There was also as annual high profile Scottish Ball which brought together Scots and Americans in an informal setting.

In 1970, the Wallace Award was created and presented annually, primarily to American-Scots, in recognition of their contribution to society. The recipients included Robert L McNeil Jnr, Senator Malcolm Wallop, Sir Sean Connery, Senator Trent Lott and Dr Linus Carl Pauling.

As a founding member of the Scottish Coalition, the Foundation was also instrumental in setting up an informal committee of national Scottish organizations.

There is now a fresh impetus to re-establish the Foundation as the pre-eminent Scottish society in the US and indeed, the Foundation once again enjoys a reputation both in Scotland and the US as a leading and pivotal Scottish presence in the United States.

This status has been achieved by enhancing the visibility and credibility of the Foundation in Scotland through regular visits and events conducted there by its association with Scotland The Brand and its ScotFest initiatives in New York City and support of "UK with NY". It has also been achieved through the sponsorship and support of National Tartan Day and its associated events in New York City and Washington DC.

In addition to these events, the Foundation has raised in excess of $250,000 for Scottish-related charities and projects. It is also producing high quality, imaginative and interesting events and is utilizing, for the benefit of other Scottish and American-Scottish interests, a network of resources it has developed within Scotland and the US and has plans to enlarge Scotland House to include a reference library, media center and restaurant.

The Foundation is also building its membership base and is ensuring that extensive databases are put in place through taking an active role in American-Scottish society in the US. It is also building a volunteer capability and restructuring its governance.
