The primary goal of the Congress for Jewish Culture, an umbrella organization for 10 cultural organizations, is to preserve and promote Yiddish language and culture; to foster all aspects of Yiddish creativity; and to respond to Yiddish cultural and educational needs of the American as well as international communities. The Congress attempts to achieve these goals through a varied program of activities, such as concerts, publications, art exhibits, etc.
Description:
The Congress for Jewish Culture is a 60 year old non-profit organization that conducts regular programming in Yiddish, such as our Kavehoyz series of Yiddish music, as well as readings, performances and lectures; publishes Di Zukunft, the world's oldest Yiddish literary journal, as well as monographs in and on the Yiddish language and culture; and administers the CYCO, Manhattan's oldest (and now only) Yiddish press and bookstore.
History:
The Congress for Jewish Culture was founded in 1948 in New York, with branches in Buenos Aires and Paris. New York is now the sole remaining branch. Among those who have been active in the organization are the literary critic Sh. Niger (Shmuel Charney), poet and dramatist H. Leivick (Leivick Halpern), and resistance fighter Szmerke Kaczerginski. Today the Congress is closely allied with the American Association of Professors of Yiddish; Forward Association; Hebrew Actors' Union; Jewish Labor Committee; Labor Zionist Alliance; League for Yiddish; Theatrical Alliance; Workmen's Circle; Yiddish Artists and Friends Actors' Club; and Yugntruf-Youth for Yiddish
