Partnership with Children is a not-for-profit organization that provides emotional and social support to at-risk children so that they can succeed in school, in society and in their lives.

Description:
The issues children face growing up in the inner-city are plentiful -- drugs, violence, death, incarceration, poor nutrition, poverty and gangs, to name just a few. Partnership with Children responds to these often extreme emotional and social concerns through two programs: Open Heart-Open Mind and Life Steps.

Open Heart-Open Mind fully integrates degreed social workers into school communities in order to facilitate supportive relationships between students, teachers, parents and administrators. Through individual, small group and crisis counseling, we help at-risk children build positive coping skills and strengthen cognitive ability. By working with teachers, principals and other staff, we make school environments more conducive to learning.

Through our Life Steps program, experienced social workers provide case management services, individual and group counseling and leadership development opportunities to families funded under the Persons in Need of Services legislation. Staff also advocate for their clients in schools, government agencies and other social service organizations.

Today Partnership with Children serves 8,000 children in elementary, middle and high schools in every borough of New York City.

History:
Founded as Big Sisters in 1908 by a group of high profile society women, Partnership with Children's early activities focused on one-on-one mentoring for “wayward” girls who were brought in front of Manhattan Children’s Court. Over the past thirty years, Big Sisters, which changed its name to Partnership with Children in 1993, has been providing individual, crisis, group and family counseling in some of New York City’s most challenging schools. Today, Partnership with Children touches over 8,000 children and adolescents in all five of New York City’s boroughs through our Open Heart-Open Mind and Life Steps programs and the Center for Capacity Building.
