Global Information Network provides critical news and information to disadvantaged communities through their media. Our focus is on stories local, national and international that impact ordinary Americans but are not fully explained or sufficiently covered in commercial media. To provide these news stories, photos and features, we offer a training program to local area college students in news writing and communications.
Description:
We are the U.S. distributor of Inter Press Service, an award-winning non-governmental media organization that spotlights social, economic and cultural news-making trends that impact the lives of ordinary people. We supplement this service with stories created by students and volunteers on local issues, and we host event and fora to discuss news-making issues in greater depth. We maintain partnerships and collaborations with other nonprofit media serving ethnic and minority communities in NY.
History:
Our organization was spun off from Inter Press Service in the early 1980s. Since then, we obtained 501(c)3 nonprofit status and have been building our own base of sustainability. We serve over 200 African-American, African, Caribbean and Latino newsweeklies nationwide with a daily news feed updated on our website and sent via email, reaching over 15 million citizens of color.
