Roosevelt Island Search And Rescue Volunteers (RISAR) was Incorperated as a 501c3 Non Profit Corporation to provide First Responce Medical Services to the residents of Roosevelt Island.
Description:
Roosevelt Island is located in the East River between Manhattan and Queens. It is a very diverse community with various civic organizations. The island also has a high population of Senior Citizens and Disabled persons. What makes Roosevelt Island unique is that the Island is technically part of Manhattan, but all Emergency Medical Services, as well as Police Services are sent from Queens. This causes a delay in Emergency Medical Services (EMS) response times in which persons experiancing a medical emergency have waited in excess of 20 minutes for an ambulance. RISAR provides First Responce - Basic Life Support services to treat and stabilize patients until an ambulance arrives. RISAR is also authorized through the NYC Regional Emergency Medical Service Council (REMSCO) as a Public Accedd Defibirilation (PAD) agency.
History:
Formed in 2005, RISAR began providing First Responce Emergency Medical Care to the residents of Roosevelt Island. RISAR has also provided stand by medical services for Roosevelt Island Day, the American Cancer Society Relay for Life, and is an Authorized CPR/AED and Basic First Aid training center for the American Safety and Health Institute (ASHI). Now as we move into 2008, RISAR wants to expand their services and create a Volunteer Ambulance Corps for the Roosevelt Island Community. This will improve the quality of Life on the Island, as well as eliminating the 20+ minute wait time for an ambulance.
