Sholem Aleichem Cultural Center
To promote Yiddish language and culture in New York. To nurture the community of Yiddish-speakers and encourage an intergenerational celebration of Yiddish.
Description and/or History:
The Sholem Aleichem Cultural Center hosts monthly Yiddish lectures, roundtable discussions, films and holiday celebrations. These events feature well-known speakers, artists and academics. In addition, there is a weekly Yiddish conversation class, run by the renowned Yiddish poet, Beyle Schaechter-Gottesman. These events are all conducted in Yiddish. The Sholem Aleichem Cultural Center came into being in the 1980's in the building which first housed the Sholem Aleichem Folk Shul 21, one of many Yiddish afternoon schools of the Sholem Aleichem Folk Institute. The Center maintains an active role in the Norwood Community in the Bronx.
