Computers for Youth (CFY) is a national non-profit organization whose mission is to help low-income children do better in school by improving their home learning environment.

Description:
CFY-New York City partners with NYC low-income public middle schools through our Take IT Home program, to offer a free computer-based home learning center to every sixth grade student and their family. We load the computers with an office suite, educational software designed to engage children in Math, English, Social Studies and Science, and free technical support for the life of the computer.

CFY-New York City also provides:

  • A half day of training for families that increases parents’ confidence as learning partners; and
  • Professional development for teachers to facilitate a connection between classroom and home learning.

As a nation, we are failing to provide low-income children the support they need during the critical middle school years. As a result, test scores are dropping sharply as students move from primary to middle school. The middle-school years are when children disengage from academics, and when parents feel less capable of helping with increasingly complex homework assignments.

History:
CFY was founded in 1999 and built on the belief that the home holds the greatest untapped potential for improving children’s academic and life-long success. CFY operates programs in five cities (New York City, Philadelphia, Atlanta, the San Francisco Bay Area and Los Angeles) and will serve more than 5,000 families in the coming year.

CFY-New York City serves students ages 11 to 13, their families and their schools. Students attend NYC public middle schools where 75% or more students are eligible for free lunch. During the past seven years, CFY-New York City has expanded from serving 230 families per year in the Bronx to serving 2,400 families per year across the city.
