To develop the professional skill set and build the confidence of low-income individuals facing employment barriers through one-on-one mentoring sessions with dedicated corporate volunteers. By building personal relationships where none had existed before, we bridge the cultural gap that divides corporations and low-income individuals and we enable those who seek our assistance to secure and retain employment with a livable wage.

Description:
Streetwise Partners operates 4 programs that service the mission of developing the skills and building the confidence of individuals with barriers to employment. We plan to work with 330 low-income clients and over 800 volunteers in 2008. The programs run year-round, and vary in time commitment from one day workshops to weekly mentorship opportunities.

StreetWise Partners effectively leverages business relationships and technology in order to provide a unique mentoring and training opportunity to clients that bridges the large cultural and perception gap dividing corporations, non-profits, volunteers and low-income individuals. Personalized, one-on-one mentoring; boundary-breaking relationship-building; and a high-impact, low-budget empowerment model rooted in volunteerism, self-help and social responsibility - all these make our approach to job readiness training unique.

History:
The vision of StreetWise Partners originated in June 1997. The founding members wanted to create an innovative way for the private sector to train low-income and/or unemployed individuals for the workforce by matching them with volunteer professionals throughout New York City. StreetWise Partners was incorporated in the State of New York in September 1997 and was granted not-for-profit status under Section 501(c)3 of the Internal Revenue Service Code in December 1997.

By the first year of operation, SWP-NY had transformed a majority of its ideals into a tangible reality. The founders received substantial backing from companies such as PricewaterhouseCoopers (then Price Waterhouse LLP) and Morgan Stanley. Additionally, the organization secured a base of clients as a result of it's initial relationships with other non-profits in New York.

Today, StreetWise Partners is able to serve over 400 clients in a year in both New York and Washington DC. We are also expanding programs to New Jersey in Fall 2008. Our scope and mission has grown dramatically since the inception and is poised to realize continued success with the involvement of high-quality partners.
