The ASPCA's purpose, as stated by its founder Henry Bergh, is "to provide effective means for the prevention of cruelty to animals throughout the United States."

Description:
Presently thousands of animals a year pass through our facilities to be sheltered, adopted or receive medical treatment. In addition to the hands-on care of animals, the ASPCA has programs that educate the public about animal welfare issues and work to protect animals through legislation. The Humane Law Enforcement Department is also fully empowered to enforce animal-related laws throughout New York State.

History:
Since it's founding the ASPCA has protected, nurtured and sheltered tens of millions of unwanted, neglected and abused animals. Before 1995, the ASPCA also handled animal control for the city, a job that is now handled by the Center for Animal Care and Control (CACC).
