Lenox Hill Hospital

Lenox Hill Hospital is dedicated to compassionate patient care, outstanding medical education, research and scholarly activity and quality service to the community.

Description and/or History:
Lenox Hill Hospital, a 652-bed acute care hospital located at 100 East 77th Street in Manhattan, has earned a national reputation for outstanding patient care and innovative medical and surgical treatments. The Hospital is particularly well known for excellence in cardiovascular disease, orthopedics, joint replacement, sports medicine, otolaryngology/head and neck surgery, and maternal/child health. A major teaching affiliate of NYU Medical Center, the Hospital is also a recognized leader in public health education and community outreach.
Lenox Hill Hospital was founded in 1857 in lower Manhattan by a small group of German American physicians whose dream it was to provide a much-needed facility for the sick in their community. In 1865, the Hospital acquired land which it now stands and three years later, the first section of the Hospital was completed. The specialty of Pediatrics was founded at here by Dr. Abraham Jacobi. The Hospital installed one of the first x-ray machines in the country and the first Tuberculosis Division organized in any hospital in the country. The Hospital was formerly called the German Hospital of New York and changed it's name to Lenox Hill Hospital in 1918. Today, Lenox Hill Hospital occupies a complex of modern buildings situated on more than one square city block and provides a full range of services to the community with clinical departments in all areas of medical science.
