It was around the early 1980s and I resided in Park Slope at the time. Arlene a Social Worker just started working with me at Max Meltzer Senior Citizen Center in Manhattan. Once she found out that I resided in Parks Slope she informed me about PSSHP where she not only was employed part time but also volunteer. She introduced to the agency and I immediately started orientation by taking calls on evening and weekends. Being a past victim of "domestic disputes" which was the term that was used back then, and the police officer would take my then husband for walks to cool off, while I was left in my apartment beaten. I was able to emphasize greatly and wanted to help others. I volunteer until I relocated to Miami, FL in 1988. I am proud that PSSHP is still around to assist and educate those whom are in need of these services. posted by scruzcal on September 8, 2007 |

I began volunteering with the PSSHP in 1987, after going to them as a victim of Domestic Violence in 1986. They gave me the strength and help I needed to leave my abuser. If it weren't for them, my family would be mourning my 20th anniversary year in Heaven. As a result of what they helped me accomplish, I was able to help many other women leave their abusers. Knowing I was able to help so many people is a wonderful feeling. I would love to go back to volunteering for this cause. I say a prayer each day for those who left their abusers, those who are still in abusive relationships, and for those who never made it out alive. God Bless! posted by Survivor on March 14, 2006 |
