The Gracie Mansion Conservancy is a private not-for-profit corporation established in 1981 to preserve, maintain and enhance Gracie Mansion--one of the oldest surviving wood structures in Manhattan and a member of The Historic House Trust. The Conservancy's mission is to raise funds to restore the historic structure and acquire furnishings that illustrate the rich history of New York; improve the surrounding landscape and gardens; and provide educational services, including publications and tours.
Description:
The Conservancy administers the tour program for the House and provides docents for special events. In addition, the Conservancy manages the collection of the House including maintenance of furnishings and decorative features, and creating and updating inventories. We also are happy to offer school tours for free on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
History:
The Conservancy began under the Koch administration and has been active since then promoting educational opportunities for the general public about the house and surrounding land. Recently, as the "People's House" the Conservancy has been able to increase the number of visitors to the house and have been able to open the 2nd floor to tours.
