To promote an appreciation of the African American legacy in Brooklyn and beyond, and to foster community empowerment and lifelong learning through research, interpretation and presentation of Weeksville History.
Description:
Weeksville Heritage Center is a premiere cultural institution rooted in the preservation of African American history offering innovative, socially conscious learning experiences in history, art, environment and technology. We are a catalyst for change based on the legacy of the historic Weeksville residents who created a thriving community modeling entrepreneurship, self-sufficiency and creativity.
History:
Weeksville's Historic Hunterfly Road Houses are what remain of the vibrant and self-sufficient African American community settled in the 1830's. The houses are New York City landmarks and are on the National Registry of Historic Places in the U.S. Weeksville Heritage Center currently provides programming that interprets history through art, literacy, technology, and the environment.
