Founded in 1960, the Ackerman Institute for the Family is one of the premier institutions for family therapy in the United States.

The Ackerman Institute offers:

• An array of clinical services that address a wide variety of family concerns and issues.
• A broad spectrum of training programs on site and in community settings around New York City and abroad.
• Innovative, cutting-edge research initiatives that focus on the development of new treatment models and new training techniques.

Through its dynamic interaction of training, treatment and research, Ackerman’s work positively affects generations of families, provides mental health care professionals with new skills and brings innovative perspectives to community service agencies and other health care facilities.

Description:
The slogan of the Ackerman Institute is “It all starts here.” Those four words reflect the Institute’s strong belief that families are the most powerful resource available to people trying to cope successfully with the complex challenges of modern life. For almost half a century, the Ackerman Institute, through its training, treatment and research programs, has helped families solve problems by increasing family resilience, strengthening family ties and developing every family’s capacity for reconciliation and forgiveness. The Ackerman Institute’s deep belief in and commitment to family therapy has played a major role in expanding the scope of the field of mental health, and the Institute today is widely acknowledged as a pioneer and leader in the field of family therapy.

History:
In 1960, Dr. Nathan W. Ackerman founded The Family Institute, Inc., based on the innovative belief that family problems are best treated within the context of the family. In 1971, Dr. Ackerman died, and the Family Institute was renamed the Nathan W. Ackerman Family Institute. In 1977, the name became the Ackerman Institute for Family Therapy. During the 1970s, Ackerman faculty presentations spread nationally to ten states and worldwide to Canada, Greece, Germany, Belgium and Luxembourg. During the 1980s and 1990s, the Institute became the Ackerman Institute for the Family. In addition to its on site clinic, the Institute developed five centers dealing with a variety of family issues, including the impact of medical crises on families, early childhood development, relational trauma, work and the family and substance abuse and the family. Today, Ackerman maintains international relationships with institutes in Argentina, Chile, Japan, China and Israel. The Ackerman Clinic, licensed by the New York State Office of Mental Health, conducts almost 17,000 client contacts per year with families. Approximately 40 percent are enrolled in Medicaid or other public assistance programs and 24 percent are working-poor families ineligible for Medicaid. These families come from all New York City boroughs and across the tri-state area. The Institute’s training programs in family therapy serve approximately 1,600 mental health professionals at the Institute and at workplace sites, including social service agencies, hospitals, family courts and community centers. The Institute maintains professional partnerships with eight schools and educational institutions, 12 medical centers, and 17 social service and medical health agencies.
