Special Olympics provides athletic training and competition opportunities to people with mental retardation. Through these events, we provide an opportunity for our clients to meet new friends and participate in a variety of activities.
Description:
Brooklyn Special Olympics provides training and competition in swimming, basketball, floor hockey, bowling, softball, track and field. We have mostly adult clients, many of whom live in group homes. Our training sessions take place on the weekends, and the sports offered change seasonally.
History:
Brooklyn Special Olympics was founded 29 years ago, and is run entirely by volunteers. Our training and competitions are held at various sites in the borough. Our volunteers can find opportunities to help either on a weekly basis, or just at special events through the year.
