Friends advocates for the the public funding needed to finish Hudson River Park as well as provides private sector financial support and programs to enhance the opportunities it offers.
Description:
Hudson River Park runs from 59th Street down to the Battery. Parts of the Park are still in construction, with completed sections in Greenwich Village, Clinton Cove and a number of other locations including Pier 84 at 44th Street and Pier 66 at 26th Street. Friends believes that the Park is an invaluable resource that enriches the lives of neighborhood residents and benefits the City. To this end, Friends works with a number of community and neighborhood organizations, advocating for the park financially, politically and socially. In addition, Friends offers a number of free or low-cost public programs including boat rides, music series and community festivals. Friends also runs educational programs such as a maritime program called Passport to the Hudson, as well as Photography and Poetry classes.
History:
Freinds of Hudson River Park was incorporated in 1999 after the creation of the Hudson River Park Act in 1998, a piece of legislation that designated the land and water for the future Hudson River Park, as well as dictating park usage and leadership. Friends currently has 4 full time employees, one part-time employee and a number of interns from the High School for Environmental Studies and the New York Harbor School.
