Description:
About Junior Achievement of New York
JANY is the local franchise of JA Worldwide, the world’s largest organization dedicated to educating young people about business, economics and entrepreneurship. For more than 76 years, JANY has been providing its financial education programs free of charge to students in New York City and Long Island. The mission of Junior Achievement of New York, Inc. (JANY) is to inspire young people to be successful. Providing children with positive adult role models, who illustrate ways to build self-confidence, develop skills and find avenues of success, is a hallmark of Junior Achievement. Through JANY’s state of the art programs taught by trained volunteers – including corporate employees, parents, university students, retirees, community-based partners, and High School Heroes – students develop an understanding of their roles in the local and global economy. Beyond specific knowledge of economics and personal finance they acquire, students gain self-confidence and self-esteem as they become aware of their own potential to make better decisions, and ultimately to succeed in their life goals. Junior Achievement of New York now delivers K-12 curriculum to more than 94,000 students in the NYC and Long Island area with the help of more than 3,900 business volunteers. For more information about Junior Achievement of New York, its programs and volunteer opportunities, visit www.jany.org.

History:
We are part of a nearly century old legacy of service to our nation's students:

Junior Achievement, Inc. was founded in 1919 by Theodore Vail, President of American Telephone & Telegraph; Horace Moses, President of Strathmore Paper Co.; and Senator Murray Crane of Massachusetts. Its first program, The Company Program, was offered to High School students on an after-school basis. In 1975, the organization entered the classroom with the introduction of Project Business for middle grades students. Today, there is a curriculum for every grade - K-12. Junior Achievement programs are delivered to more than 4 million students nationally and nearly 3 million in 97 countries around the world.

1929 - 1975:
Junior Achievement of New York (JANY) was founded in 1929, and until the mid- 1970's, the only program provided was the JA Company program which operated after-school exclusively for High School students. Guided by adult business volunteer advisors, these students would meet one night a week and form companies which would sell stock to capitalize, elect officers, make and market a product then liquidate after 30 weeks of operation. The largest number of students involved in any one year was approximately 3000.

1975 - 2000:
In the mid-seventies, JANY began to transition many of its programs from after-school to in-school while maintaining a focus on economics and free enterprise.

Today:
Today, Junior Achievement of New York offers in-school and after-school programs that span K-12. This past school year, we reached more than 94,000 students, through volunteers teaching JANY programs in the classroom, workplace experiences (i.e. field trips to companies; internships; participation in our Job Shadow Program, summer jobs and programs) and collaborations with afterschool program partners. JANY's annual operating budget is $4.3 million

Our Future:
As we move forward, our vision is to grow our student outreach in a sustainable, incremental manner and aggressively grow the number of students who also get workplace experiences to reinforce the concepts they learn in our classroom programs. We believe that our maximum impact resides at the intersection of the classroom and the workplace. We are committed to growing both to the full extent permitted by our resources.

Overall Experience    Experience rating
MY EXPERIENCE VOLUNTEERING WITH THE PROGRAM WAS WONDERFUL

I VOLUNTEER WITH CLARA BARTON HIGH SCHOOL WHICH WAS MY HIGH SCHOOL AT THE TIME IN 1998, MY PROGRAM INSTRUCTOR WAS MS. BIGHAM. THE VOLUNTEERING EXPERIENCE WAS SO WONDERFUL, THAT THERE WERE SOME OTHER CLASSMATES THAT DROP OUT OF THE PROGRAM AND I OFFERED AND ENJOY PICKING UP THERE SLACK. IT GAVE ME THE EXPERIENCE OF KNOWING WHAT ITS LIKE TO BE A TEACHER, AND AT THE TIME I WAS THE ONLY 9TH GRADER WHO WAS IN THE PROGRAM, EVERYONE ELSE WERE SENIORS. JUNIOR ACHIEVEMENT IS A WONDERFUL PROGRAM TO VOLUNTEER WITH I WOULD ADVISED ANYONE TO VOLUNTEER WITH THE AGENCY.
