The mission of the Brooklyn Historical Society (BHS) is to connect the past to the present and make the vibrant history of Brooklyn tangible, relevant, and meaningful for today’s diverse communities, and for generations to come.
Description:
Founded in 1863, the Brooklyn Historical Society is a nationally recognized urban history center, comprised of a museum; scholarly research library; and educational center dedicated to preserving and encouraging the study of Brooklyn's extraordinary 400-year history. Housed in a magnificent landmark building in Brooklyn Heights, designed by George Post and opened in 1881, BHS maintains an important collection of archival documents, photographs, maps, books, artifacts and paintings relating to national and local history. BHS’ Othmer Library has the most comprehensive collection of Brooklyn-related materials in the United States, as well as important collections relating to other topics in American history. Today’s BHS is a cultural hub for civic dialogue, thoughtful engagement, and community outreach.
