OLIVER MENTORING PROGRAM MISSION:
The mission of the Oliver Mentoring Program is to encourage the development of successful, confident, and well-adjusted Oliver Scholars by providing them with the opportunity to build meaningful relationships with positive, caring, adult role models with whom Scholars can identify.

Description:
The Oliver Program (www.theoliverprogram.org) is an organization that places talented youth of color from NYC into the top independent schools of the Northeast. We are seeking mentors for the entering freshman class. The commitment lasts one year and requires a minimum amount of 4-6 hours communication (e-mail, phone, in person) per month. Mentors are on a career track in the professional community who offer personal and academic advice to high achieving youth.

Matches are made by mentor coordinator, and relationship is determined within a contract developed by each individual match.

Interested parties fill out two applications, go through a fingerprinting screening and interview, and are trained by the Oliver Mentor Coordinator.

History:
The Oliver Program was founded in 1984 in honor of the late Dr. Albert G. Oliver, a distinguished educator and activist within the New York City public school system who devoted his life to the children of New York.

Oliver Scholars are highly motivated students of character who uphold the very best in academic excellence and service to their communities. Aspiring Oliver Scholars are in the top 10% of their class, are active members of their school and home communities, and represent over 100 middle schools in New York City.
