New York Road Runners is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to promoting the sport of running and walking for health, recreation and competition.

Description:
Founded in 1958 with a membership of 47, New York Road Runners (NYRR) is one of the world's foremost running organizations. NYRR is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to promoting the sport of running and walking for health, recreation, and competition, and provides full professional services related to all aspects of racing. The organization has a full-time staff of more than 60 employees, supplemented by a network of thousands of volunteers, serving more than 39,000 members from every U.S. state and more than 100 countries.
We also serve the community of Central Park through various free programs such as Group runs, Free Walks for Seniors, and the NYRR Central Park Safety Patrol. We staff an info. booth in Central Park year 'round seven days a week with up to two shifts per day. We have weekly races in Central Park that help support our Community Services Programs and also raise money for various causes such as cancer awareness, other health issues, and other causes.

History:
Founded in 1958 with a membership of 47, New York Road Runners (NYRR) is one of the world's foremost running organizations. Since then it has grown to being an organization that has a full-time staff of more than 60 employees, supplemented by a network of thousands of volunteers, serving more than 39,000 members from every U.S. state and more than 100 countries. We put on races nearly every week, mostly in Central Park but we also put on other events outside of Manhattan such as the Five Borough Half-Marathon series with a half marathon in each borough. Our most famous event is the ING New York City Marathon. This grew out of The Cherry Tree Marathon that was run in the Bronx. In 1970 it moved to Central Park as the New York City Marathon and had a little over 100 finishers. In 1976 The Marathon moved from being run just in Central Park to encompassing all five boroughs, starting in Staten Island and snaking its way through Brooklyn, Queens, Manhattan, The Bronx, and then back into Manhattan to a finish in Central Park. The Marathon has grown to having over 30,000 participants from all over the world. Over 50,000 apply each year but space limitations force a cap of somewhere not too far over 30,000.
