Our mission is to keep the NYC park known as Dag Hammarskjold Plaza and its Katharine Hepburn Garden clean, green, and healthy. We also facilitate events that foster community and partner with cultural organizations to bring music, dance, and theater to our performance space.
Description:
Dag Hammarskjold Plaza is located on East 47th Street between 1st and 2nd Avenues. Conceived as a Gateway to the United Nations, it is Manhattan's most internationally visible public park. As a volunteer organization that provides most of the park's upkeep, we need volunteers to plant and tend the park's Katharine Hepburn Garden, to assist with events, to help raise funds, and for outreach: newsletter, website, mailings, publicity. Gardeners, writers, graphic designers, artists, carpenters and techies always welcome!
History:
We incorporated as a nonprofit organization in 1993 to shore up support for the reconstruction of the park by demonstrating the community's long-term commitment to park upkeep. Since the "new" park reopened to the public in 1999, we have provided most of the care and beautification, contracting maintenance firms for cleaning services and utilizing volunteers to plant and tend the Katharine Hepburn Garden. Our board of directors is comprised of civic-minded individuals who live in New York City.
