The mission of Eviction Intervention Services is to prevent homelessness. Our mission is accomplished by keeping residents in their communities, preserving existing affordable housing, and promoting and supporting the construction of affordable housing for low income families. EIS exists to protect and improve New Yorkers' quality of life by stabilizing the neighborhood. Our aim is to keep all people, including families with children under the age of 18, senior citizens, the homebound, and the physically and/or mentally impaired in their own apartment, promoting the safety and security of our neighborhoods. EIS helps to preserve existing affordable housing stock by advocating for and educating tenants, preventing their eviction.

EIS' programs of homelessness prevention were established, noting that, in the words of our founder Gloria W. Milliken, prevention is the only way to stem the unceasing tide of homelessness.

History:
History
Eviction Intervention Services, Homelessness Prevention, Inc. was founded in 1984 to serve low- and moderate-income residents in mid-town Manhattan's East Side. This work began in response to requests from neighborhood hospitals, universities, public schools, churches, synagogues, senior citizen's and social service organizations that identified a need for a full-time program to deal with basic housing problems and related services. The community's needs have shaped our priorities: we must save affordable housing and prevent homelessness.
