Our mission is to broaden public awareness by welcoming a diverse audience to distinctive examples of architecture, engineering, and design; to educate and inspire discussion of issues of excellence in architecture and urban planning; and to showcase outstanding new work as well as buildings and structures of historic merit.

Description:
openhousenewyork is made up of New Yorkers from various backgrounds with a shared commitment to encourage direct public experience of architecture and design. We are planning our 5th annual city-wide celebration of New York City's greatest architecture and design for the weekend of October 6-7, 2007. A weekend event in all five boroughs, invites the public to tour, free of charge, building and facilities that are usually closed to the public. Famous Landmarks to Insider Favorites, Subways to Substations, Tunnels to Towers, Boardrooms to Bedrooms, Mansions to Markets, Radical New Work to Historic Sites. A weekend filled with educational programming developed by design-related organizations.

History:
openhousenewyork inc. (OHNY) was founded by Scott Lauer in August, 2001 and incorporated as a 501(c)(3) organization in May, 2002. Inspired by his volunteer experiences with London Open House, OHNY was developed in order to: Promote a greater appreciation of New York City's built-environment; Broaden public awareness by exposing a diverse audience to distinctive examples of architecture, engineering and design; Educate and inspire discussion of issues of excellence in design, planning and preservation; Showcase outstanding new work and buildings and structures of historic merit. OHNY has garnered the support of the art and design, business and civic communities including partnerships with major institutions and small, progressive organizations. On October 11-12, 2003, the inaugural OHNY weekend event welcomed 45,000 visitors to 86 sites of architectural interest -- at no charge -- making it the largest event of its kind in NYC history. These locations reflect the diversity of New York's architecture and chronicle the City's historical, cultural and urban development.
