Mission: The mission of Greenwich House is to help individuals and families lead more fulfilling lives by offering social and health services, cultural and educational programs, and opportunities for civic involvement to New Yorkers of all ages and backgrounds.

Vision: As was true with Greenwich House's founders in 1902, Greenwich House is dedicated to improving the quality of life of the individuals and families who make up the communities we serve and who need our services. We welcome New Yorkers from all segments of society, regardless of age, gender, sexual orientation, race, ethnicity, and religion. We offer flexible and responsive services that address a wide variety of contemporary challenges--early childhood education, drug and alcohol abuse, mental health, health care and services for people living with HIV/AIDS, arts education and enrichment, and elder care.

Description:
Greenwich House is a community center where over 9,000 New Yorkers receive counseling, celebrate the arts, and socialize with their neighbors. Some of the people Greenwich House help each year include:

§ Children victimized by sexual or physical abuse and their families receive free psychological and psychiatric care at our Children's Safety Project, which also provides child abuse prevention classes and referral services for schools, hospitals and other agencies.

§ Senior citizens struggling with fixed incomes, health problems and isolation attend Greenwich House Senior Center for daily congregate meals and recreational activities. New York's elderly population can contact our Senior Citizens Health & Consultation Center for psychiatric treatment or to obtain a home health aide.

§ People who are HIV+ and those living with AIDS receive medical treatment and intensive casework services at our Primary Care Initiative. Greenwich House AIDS Mental Health Clinic offers psychological and psychiatric care.

§ Children from low-income minority communities obtain high-quality, subsidized early childhood education at our Preschool.

§ Recovering substance abusers and their families attend support groups and receive psychotherapy from our Chemical Dependency Services. In addition, parolees working to reclaim their lives obtain vocational counseling and support services from the Parole Treatment Program.

§ For New Yorkers struggling with opiate addictions, Greenwich House operates two Methadone Maintenance Treatment Program clinics, which have recently received the Commission on the Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities' highest possible rating.

§ Aspiring and established artists, alongside children, teenagers and adults, seek affordable, world-renowned instruction in sculpture and ceramics at the Pottery, and in orchestral instruments, dance, voice and other musical disciplines at the Greenwich House Music School.

WHO WE SERVE
Although it has been located in the heart of the West Village for over 100 years, Greenwich House programs provide services to over 9,000 individuals from all five New York City boroughs. The heaviest concentrations of participants either live or work in Manhattan with Brooklyn and the Bronx equally represented after Manhattan. In all our programs (including the arts), adults make up 66% of our clients, children, 34%. Of those who participate in the substance abuse, mental health and HIV programs, 32% are white, 31% are Hispanic, 32% are Black and 5% are Asian or other ethnic group.

Though diverse, these special populations rely on Greenwich House to help them build more fulfilling lives for themselves and their families. Volunteer support allows us to maintain our high level of quality services needed by these clients.

History:
When Greenwich House opened as a settlement house on Thanksgiving Day 1902, it helped immigrants learn English, enroll their children in school and find jobs. Greenwich House is one of a very few non-profit organizations that has provided continuous service for over a century. In that time, Greenwich House has adapted to and addressed the most pressing needs of the New York community by providing a comprehensive array of affordable services.
