The mission of Peace Games is to build the capacity of young people to be peacemakers; to form partnerships with elementary schools, families and young adult volunteers to empower students to create their own safe classrooms and communities.

Description:
The Peace Games model is unique. No one else is replicating its comprehensive approach to youth violence. Peace Games addresses systemic change. We start early—Kindergarten through 8th grade--and build capacity of schools to sustain a violence prevention skills education program for years to come.

While reducing anti-social behaviors which have reached epidemic proportions in our schools, Peace Games transforms a school climate by teaching peacemaking skills which translate into heightened respect for authority, consideration of fellow student needs and feelings, student driven school beautification and community service projects, reduction in absenteeism, higher test scores and a sense of well-being for students and staff alike. The key to success is reaching children early in life.

A Peace Games staff member is stationed in the school who then creates a Peace Games Leadership Team, comprised of teachers, administrators, parents, and community members, who tailor the program to the unique needs and resources of the school community. Young adult volunteers teach the Peace Games curriculum while teachers reinforce the lesson in the students’ daily routines. This strong partnership continues for three and a half years, building a foundation for students, teachers, administrators, and parents to create a tradition of peace in their school community.

The unique Peace Games approach engages whole school communities-– students, families, teachers, and volunteers-–to build skills of cooperation, communication, and conflict resolution. Since we build unique partnerships with each community, Peace Games has the potential to be successful in a variety of contexts allowing for a high degree of fidelity and local innovation and ownership.

History:
Peace Games was founded by Dr. Francelia Butler, a professor of children’s literature, as a one-day festival uniting hundreds of children to share their visions and plans for peace. In 1992, Dr. Butler brought Peace Games to Harvard University. For the next four years, Harvard students directed the program, developing Peace Games into a school-wide violence prevention program, recruiting volunteers from several universities to work with students in local elementary schools. In 1996, Peace Games was incorporated as an independent nonprofit organization. Peace Games has developed Dr. Butler’s dream into a comprehensive violence prevention education program that has served over 25,000 students in Boston, Los Angeles, Fairbanks, Alaska and now New York City.
