Since 1897, Hartley House, a neighborhood-based settlement house, has been providing services and activities designed to improve the lives of individuals, families, and communities. Our commitment to our neighbors of all ages, from infants to senior citizens, has truly made a difference for individuals, families and the community as a whole.
Description:
Located on West 46th Street between Ninth and Tenth Avenues, Hartley House offers an inviting and comfortable environment in four connected brownstones, a large, restored back courtyard planted with trees and shrubs, and a rustic three-story studio building. On any given day, Hartley House serves approximately 600 people of all ages, on and off site. Hartley House provides a wide range of programs and services designed to improve the quality of life in the Clinton/Hell’s Kitchen neighborhood. We respond to the needs of the community through a variety of programs from day care and after school programs for children, to a small alternative high school for teens, to adult education and case management programs for adults and seniors.
History:
Hartley House was founded by Marcellus Hartley on January 1, 1897, and is named for his father Robert M. Hartley. Robert M. Hartley was the first Corresponding Secretary and agent of the Society for Improving the Condition of the Poor, which later became the Community Service Society. Members of Mr. Hartley’s family have taken a keen interest in the well being of the house since its founding and today descendants of the family are still active on the Board of Trustees.
