The Arts Den New York

| Last updated on April 30, 2008 |
The Arts Den New York exists to provide opportunities for artists who are of unique cultures, senior citizens, persons with disabilities, and others whose voices we rarely hear. One major goal is to use art (especially theater) as a tool for developing diverse audiences consisting of people from every conceivable walk of life. We also hope to unite people by fostering more cross-cultural and inter-generational experiences that promote tolerance and acceptance of things outside of our usual comfort zones.
Description:
We are a new, emerging organization with big dreams and limited resources, but are determined to acquire the necessary funds, skills, and support that will enable the programs we envision to prosper and grow. Presently, we are implementing short and long-range planning for the following programs: THE ARTSCOPE CENTURY 22 PERFORMING ARTS SERIES, THE FRIED CHICKEN & TALENT CABARET, and THE WRITER'S ACADEMY. THE ARTSCOPE CENTURY 22 PERFORMING ARTS SERIES is the center of the organization where we focus on our mission of providing opportunities for talented artists who are often seen as outside of the comfort zones of what people believe to be mainstream America. This series will present exceptional programs with special emphasis on theatrical presentations, but is open to other forms of performing arts that include music and dance. THE ARTS DEN NEW YORK hopes to develop both new and previously produced work(s), while exploring different ways of presenting old ideas. However, our production values are sensitive to the original intent and vision of the chosen works. Consequently, the ultimate goal is always for our audiences to see older, disabled, and other under exposed talent in ways that are non-stereotypical, broader, and well rounded, as all human beings should be portrayed on stage.
History:
Within a short period of time, we have been able to accomplish things that companies with more mileage have not. Our "immediate family" consists of a small, but dedicated group of people who share the same vision and goals that are consistent with our mission statement. We are professional, talented, pleasant, and work as a team of players who unwavering in their commitment to our success. Moreover, those who join us are in for a rewarding, fun exciting, inspiring, and educational adventure, with a young company that has already gained a reputation for doing quality work. It began with our inaugural production, the critically acclaimed and multi-award winning one-man play entitled, FOUR ONE-LEGGED MEN. Written and performed by Gary Corbin. FOUR ONE-LEGGED MEN features four distinct above-knee, male, right leg amputees from different backgrounds, seasons and eras. Consistent with the mission of our organization, this pioneering play recently enjoyed successful runs at the The 10th Annual New York International Fringe Festival, The Montreal and Buffalo Infringement Festivals, The Greater Newark Black Disabled Arts Festival (Paul Robeson Center/Rutgers U) and Off-Off Broadway in the heart of Manhattan's Theater District. We are presently a member of the Alliance of Resident Theaters/New York - A.R.T/NY, where we are receiving a multitude of excellent guidance that will enable us to prosper and grow, while formulating long and short-range goals regarding our future productions and programs. In addition, our Fiscal Sponsor is Fractured Atlas, a 501(c)(3), tax-exempt organization that accepts tax-deductible donations, on our behalf, from individuals, foundations, and corporations. Presently, we are preparing for another New York opening of FOUR ONE-LEGGED MEN followed by a national tour. We also plan to audition all types of performing arts talent to participate in our FRIED CHICKEN & TALENT CABARET, where we are especially interested in "rare, exotic or unique" theater, music, dance and other types of talent. In addition, an Open Call is coming up for actors of every background with special emphasis on the groups we mention in our mission statement. Presently, Our WRITER'S ACADEMY will focus on developing playwrights who are senior citizens because we feel they are a severely neglected portion of our population who have stories to tell that could benefit us all. Nevertheless, we will expand our writer's development programs once we have accomplished the task of producing more opportunities for senior playwrights and actors. Finally, our history includes an OPEN DOOR POLICY towards all who believe in our mission including (but not limited to) those with the following skills: actor/actress, musician, dancer/choreographer, performing artist, playwright, arts administrator, fund raiser, audience development, marketing, web/graphic design, financial record keeper, data base management, grants writer/researcher, stage manager, house manager, lighting/sound designer, volunteer, or patron.
