Public Allies’ mission is to advance diverse young leaders (called "Allies") to strengthen communities, nonprofits, and civic participation. We create a pipeline for young people to begin careers and service in the public sector. The vision of Public Allies is to develop communities where people of all backgrounds, beliefs and experiences work together and share responsibility for improving their lives and the lives of those around them.
Description:
Through our core leadership development program, Public Allies advances the skills, networks and experience of diverse young people as they strengthen communities, nonprofits and civic participation. Public Allies selects our communities' most promising young leaders, ages 18-30, who commit to a rigorous and rewarding ten-month program of full-time, paid apprenticeships in community organizations, team service projects and weekly leadership training. The Public Allies program consists of: (a) Apprenticeships-Allies are placed at a community based non-profit where they serve 10 months, engaged in direct service activities that increase the organizations’ capacity to serve their constituents and teaching Allies valuable job and life skills, (b) Leadership Development-Allies participate in weekly training and receive individual coaching and mentoring to gain the skills, abilities, and values to be effective leaders, (c) Team Service Projects-Ally teams work to develop and implement a service project that achieves a measurable impact and enhances the quality of life in New York communities, and (d) Alumni Leadership Network-Public Allies continues to develop the leadership of our alumni through formal educational, career development, networking, advocacy and volunteerism.
History:
Since 1991, over 2,000 diverse young leaders have completed the Public Allies program in eleven communities across the United States. Public Allies New York was founded in 1999 to identify and support the development of young adult leaders from the five boroughs of New York City. To date, approximately 150 young leaders from diverse backgrounds have completed the Public Allies New York program, and the vast majority continues to be active in service, advocacy and social change in our communities.
