Target Margin Theater is founded on the principle that works of art return us to real truths more powerfully by their divergence from a strict illustration of reality. Through classic as well as contemporary texts, we seek continuously to expand our conception of what can take place in a theater.

Description:
Target Margin usually produces 1 to 3 main shows each season. Since our first production, Titus Andronicus, we have returned to Shakespeare time and time again, as well as producing classic authors such as Chekhov and Brecht. We have also developed a body of work in opera and musical theater: Young Goodman Brown by Richard Foreman and Phillip Johnston, Mother Courage with an original score by Thomas Cabaniss, and our OBIE award-winning Mamba's Daughters. Our casting and programming are aggressively cross-cultural which has helped us attract an ethnically diverse audience. We continuously make significant outreach efforts to communities we think would have interest in our shows. We are also actively engaged in developing relationships in our neighborhood, Brooklyn’s Fort Greene, including a youth outreach program in the Summer Youth Theatre Festival at South Oxford Space.

History:
Target Margin Theater was founded in 1991 by Artistic Director David Herskovits. The company began at Nada with a production of Shakespeare’s Titus Andronicus. We have continued to work in the East Village, Lower East Side, and Soho and in Off Broadway theaters, most recently at Classic Stage Company. In 1998 we received an OBIE award for our production of Mamba’s Daughters, which enjoyed a critically acclaimed run in New York City and then toured to the Spoleto USA Festival in Charleston, South Carolina in 1999. We have also toured to Mass MoCA and the Bonn Biennale in Germany. Target Margin has co-produced with The Vineyard Theater and has had creative residencies at The Public Theater, Lincoln Center Theater, New York Theater Workshop, and Abrons Arts Center. Target Margin’s seventeen seasons of work include adaptations of Shakespeare’s Titus Andronicus, Hamlet, Cymbeline, Measure for Measure, and Anthony and Cleopatra (Target Margin’s Egypt), Christopher Marlowe’s Dido, Queen of Carthage, Tamburlaine, and The Jew of Malta, Charles Peguy’s The Mystery of the Charity of Joan of Arc, Gertrude Stein’s Objects Lie on a Table, Chekhov’s The Seagull, Marguerite Duras’ India Song, Bertolt Brecht’s Mother Courage, Ibsen’s Little Eyolf, Hans Henry Jahnn’s Medea, the American premiere of Julian Green’s South, Preston Sturges’ Strictly Dishonorable, and People are Wrong! a new musical by Julia Greenberg and Robin Golwasser along with many readings, workshops, and productions as part of the Target Margin Laboratory. Target Margin’s 2001/2002 season, “TMT Goes to the Opera,” featured productions of Beaumarchais’ The Marriage of Figaro and Sandman, a new opera by Target Margin company members Thomas Cabaniss, Douglas Langworthy, and David Herskovits. Target Margin has also presented new works by Todd Alcott, Rinne Groff, Richard Foreman and Phillip Johnson, and Michael Brodsky. Target Margin Theater’s 2005/2006 season was entirely devoted Goethe’s Faust parts I&II. This project was developed over many years and the two-part six-hour production had its premiere in May 2006 in a co-production with Classic Stage Company. Since 2006 Target Margin has been exploring ancient Greek texts beginning with a festival in January 2007 which included full productions of new adaptations of Euripides’ Suppliants entitled As Yet Thou Art Young and Rash and Sophocles’ Women of Trachis. We continued with The Argument & Dinner Party, presented by The Kitchen in June 2007 and re-mounted by Target Margin in January 2008 at Theater Three. In May 2008 Classic Stage Company presented Old Comedy, an adaptation of Aristophanes’ Frogs, which Target Margin commissioned David Greenspan to create.
