Samaritans of New York is the local branch of an international humanitarian movement with over 400 centers in 40 countries whose mission is to provide immediate and ongoing emotional support to those in crisis, to provide support to those who have lost a loved one to suicide and to raise public awareness around suicide and the keys to its prevention.
Description:
Established in 1983, Samaritans is a non-religious, non-profit organization devoted to providing confidential emotional support to people who are in crisis. To this end, Samaritans runs a confidential, 24-hour crisis response hotline staffed entirely by trained volunteers who provide emotional support to those who feel depressed, in crisis and/or suicidal. The organization also runs support groups for those who have lost a loved one to suicide and a public education and awareness program for lay and professional caregivers and service providers focusing on effective crisis communications and crisis intervention.
