Center for Jewish History
Powered by Truist
Last updated on March 26, 2008

The partner institutions of the Center for Jewish History represent one of the nation's leading resources for the appreciation of the cultural and historical legacies of the Jewish people.

Description:
The five partners at the Center for Jewish History -- American Jewish Historical Society, American Sephardi Federation, Leo Baeck Institute, Yeshiva University Museum, and YIVO Institute for Jewish Research -- share a common vision of preserving and presenting Jewish culture and history, coming together to create a meeting place where intellectual inquiries may be freely explored and where the general public can find cultural programs devoted to a wide variety of themes and concerns. The Center's partners rich holdings include millions of archival documents and thousands of precious books, as well as art and artifacts and a wealth of photographs -- all of which is enhanced through research projects, a scholarship program, and various collaborations with universities and other research institutions. At the heart of the Center is the Reading Room. The partners' archival treasures, considered the largest collection outside Israel, offer valuable source material for anyone interested in the study of Jewish history and culture.

History:
The Center opened in October 2000. However, all the partner organizations existed before at different locations. Founding dates range from the American Jewish Historical Society in the 1890s to the American Sephardi Federation in the 1970s. The Center came into being as a result of the combined vision and leadership of several of the most prominent members of the academic and philanthropic Jewish communities, through which five pioneering institutions became partners to create an unparalleled complex devoted to the furtherance of Jewish scholarship worldwide.
