For 32 years, DOROT has worked to provide food, housing, companionship, education, and cultural enrichment to thousands of elderly New Yorkers and fosters friendship and respect between the generations. DOROT enhances the lives of thousands of seniors and their caregivers through a partnership of professional staff and a pool of 10,000 volunteers of all ages. In a world whose aging population is increasing at an exponential rate, DOROT is a model for volunteer-based communal service to the elderly. Description and/or History:
DOROT was founded by a group of university students who visited homebound elders on Manhattan's Upper West Side. From this grassroots movement, DOROT has provided food, housing, education and companionship to its seniors and those who car for them each year. As DOROT evolves to meet the growing needs and numbers of our elders, our basic philosophy and approach remain fundamentally the same. Volunteers of all ages help deliver vital services to the frail elderly and forge loving bonds between the generations. They, in return, are deeply enriched by their experiences. Contact people:
