Through high quality pre-owned office equipment we are improving the economic health of many schools and organizations by making computers and other equipment available to them because we believe that successful conservation depends on this experience. We utilize high risk youth and the learning disabled in our daily operations.
Description:
Appreciating the constant need for storage space, manpower and free time, Tools for Schools Inc (TFS), a tax-exempt not-for-profit organization, expedites the movement of reuseable furniture and computers from businesses that do not need them to neighborhoods that do. Over fourteen years, we have developed an extensive network of 750 schools (mostly inner-city) and non-profits. In addition, not-for-profits and community groups gladly accepted donations. To give recycling a greater use than waste prevention, they plan to train youth to manage the day-to-day operations of the organization. The experience they gain will help the students enter the job market. This network is so respected that corporations call to find homes for their excess materials, donating millions of dollars worth of furniture and computers over the past several years. TFS saves recipients time by previewing furniture for them to avoid inclusion of anything broken. The program is about recycling and reuse, and is also a creative response to dwindling government resources for public education.
History:
Founded in 1992 while Ms. Hepburn was an employee of a Manhattan corporation and became aware of the large amount of wasted office supplies. We have recently moved in with Per Scholas computer recycling organization to improve the volume of New Yorkers served.
