The Queens Jewish Community Council provides economic empowerment and social services for a multi-ethnic and impoverished community with immigrant, senior, and low-income populations in Queens.
Description:
The Queens Jewish Community Council, Inc. is a well-known agency in the borough for immigrant services including: (1) Project Necessity, which facilitates family and youth managed care and health insurance, (2) a food pantry that distributes food package to over 900 poor families on a monthly basis, (3) social services assistance that includes entitlement advocacy and housing and tenant assistance, (4) family counseling including anger management, conflict resolution, coping skills, parenting and marriage workshops, acculturation assistance, immigration counseling, domestic violence victim assistance, and interpretation and translation services, (5) a special focus on Youth-at-Risk Programming that involves after-school mentoring, holiday events, and peer group counseling, and parent-child mediation, (6) the only Single Stop in Queens sponsored by the Metropolitan Council on Jewish Poverty under the auspices of the Robin Hood Foundation, (7) the direct liaison for the Metropolitan Council on Jewish Poverty to the Bukharian communities in Queens, (8) the only designated Queens location for the New York Legal Assistance Group's Immigrant Initiative to offer legal services for documented and undocumented immigrants through the New York City Department of Youth and Community Development's Immigrant Initiative, (9)the Immigrant Educational Workshop Series, featuring seminars on financial literary, predatory lending and other consumer issues, preparing home emergency kits, managed care informational sessions, immigrant acculturation, civics and citizenship preparation, elder abuse, memory loss prevention, and other health/nutrition issues.
History:
Since 1968, the Queens Jewish Community Council has served the needs of the people of Queens with kindness, compassion, and understanding. The QJCC has provided social services, cultural programming and educational forums for senior, immigrant, and low-income communities living in Queens.
