East Harlem Block Nursery, Inc. has a long-standing mission to generate community leadership and self-empowerment through educational and community development programs and services for the East Harlem community.

Description:
East Harlem Block Nursery, Inc., also known as East Harlem Block Schools is a community-based organization, established nearly four decades ago, with the goal of increasing educational attainment, civic participation and self-advocacy toward the improvement of the community at-large in East Harlem. The organization's long-standing mission has been, and continues to be, to generate community leadership through educational and community development programs and services.

History:
EHBS (EHBS) was founded in 1965 by a group of African-American and Hispanic parents who, faced with a lack of quality childcare alternatives, established a nursery school (East Harlem Block Nursery) for the children of the community. Concurrently, the parents began staffing the classrooms themselves and, through a partnership with several colleges, became teacher certified and earned their undergraduate degrees. Thus, the nursery school became the first parent-controlled daycare center to receive public funding in New York. The history of the founding of EHBS illustrates by understanding and exercising their to civic participation and self-determination, impoverished communities can advocate for and increase the quality of education and services available to them and their families.
