New York City Rescue Mission offers spiritual hope, food, clothing, and shelter to people in crisis in Lower Manhattan.

Description:
New York City Rescue Mission provides overnight guests with nutritious meals, housing, spiritual guidance, medical/social service support and clean clothing. In addition, our long-term residents are offered career development assistance, financial and job skills training, Internet and email access, and GED preparation courses. Private and group counseling is also encouraged.

The New York City Rescue Mission has 100 beds, 70 of which are for overnight guests.

History:
Jerry & Maria McAuley founded 'America's First Rescue Mission' in 1872 as Helping Hand for Men. Their work blossomed into New York City Rescue Mission which has been serving the city ever since and has inspired the creation of 300 rescue missions throughout the US and Canada.

McAuley, a self-described "rogue and street thief" was transformed while reading the Bible in Sing Sing prison in the 1860's. After his release he met Maria whom he would one day marry; like himself, Maria was converted from a life of sin. Together, they began a shelter for the "unworthy poor". Jerry and Maria were the first in America to open the doors of a religious facility institution to outcasts of society each nite of the year.
