Mission Statement: Transitional Services for New York’s human service professionals work with persons with mental illness to help to enrich their lives. We utilize a broad spectrum of client-centered services to support growth and empower individuals to achieve increased levels of independence and self-reliance. Vision Statement Transitional Services for New York is working to become a recognized leader in the Human Services field by providing innovative and effective programs.
Description:
TSI supports consumers through two types of facilities: residential and outpatient components. The residential programs currently supervise and house 354 people in dormitories and apartments throughout Queens and the Bronx. One hundred and seventy-five (175) of these individuals are placed in Supported Housing in Queens. In addition to the residential facilities six outpatient components provide clinical, continuing day treatment, vocational, socialization and employment services to promote greater independence and freedom as consumers tackle the responsibilities of everyday living.
History:
In 1975 the families of several handicapped children set about establishing Transitional Services for New York, Inc., a not-for-profit agency that would serve as an alternative to hospital placement. Their belief was rooted in the philosophy that the agency, as an extended family, could ease the burden of caring for the mentally ill and handicapped for their families and their communities. Today, a network of both staff and family supports the ambitions of over a thousand clients yearly.
